Selecting a Computer for College

É«ÖÐÉ« commonly utilizes Microsoft 365 services. Chromebooks are not recommended for use as primary devices for coursework at É«ÖÐÉ«. IT Services has put together the minimum and recommended computer specifications to consider. We curated this list based on a variety of system requirements.

Some programs have specific technology requirements. We strongly recommend that you contact an instructor in your program area to ask about the required software and ensure you have access to a computer that meets all software system requirements. Instructor contact information can be found in the SCC Employee Directory or in .  Depending on the device, the availability of applications and their functions varies for Microsoft 365 products (such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and other applications used in your courses.

Windows Systems

• Minimum:

  • Storage: 128GB SSD
  • Memory (RAM): 8 GB
  • Processor: Intel with Windows 11 () or AMD with Windows 11 ()
  • Built-in camera, speakers, and microphone (or externally connected devices)

• Recommended:

  • Storage: 128 GB SSD
  • Memory (RAM): 16 GB DDR4
  • Processor: Intel i5 (8^th Gen or newer), or AMD for Windows 11
  • Built-in camera, speakers, microphone
  • WiFi: 5 or 6, 5Ghz capable

MacOS Systems

Only select models of Mac computers will run the requirements listed below.

• Required Operating System: Sonoma (14) or newer.  If you already have an Apple computer here are.
• Built-in camera, speakers, microphone
• Memory (RAM): 8 GB
• 128 GB Flash / SSD storage
• Intel Core i5, Apple M1 or newer

Common Application System Requirements:

• (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) – Scroll down to see ‘Microsoft 365 plans for business, education, and government.’

• – Browsers (Updated within the newest two releases): Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari. Internet Explorer is NOT supported.
