Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence
Captioning is a critical part of making learning accessible to ALL students and supports SCC鈥檚 mission to provide 鈥渁ccessible higher education.鈥 Also, SCC must comply with federal requirements for providing inclusive and equitable access, so captioning is not an option.
The Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence (CTLE) and accessibility services in the Academic Support Center (ASC) have partnered to streamline processes to help you caption course videos used in online and hybrid classes.
Our request to all faculty teaching online or hybrid courses:
- Check to see what videos you currently use in your classes and see if they are captioned. Many may already have captions available (like TedTalks or YouTube videos).
- If you have videos without captions, click on this link to .
- Your request will come into CTLE and we will ensure the videos are captioned for you!
Questions You May Have:
Remind me 鈥 How exactly do I request captions?
Click on the link to complete the . The form includes 10 questions about your course and the videos you need to be captioned, then will provide a link to a shared folder where you can upload your video files. CTLE will take care of getting those captioned and will return the videos to you when ready.
What if I have multiple videos that need captions?
You may submit one form for captioning multiple videos in a single course, but please submit a new form for videos in each course. In other words: Different course = New form!
Do I need to caption videos if no one in my class needs an accommodation?
Yes, all videos should be captioned whether you have a student who needs captions for an accommodation or not. Many students benefit from captions, including those trying to view videos in a noisy place 鈥 captions can make it possible for all students to do their schoolwork, even if they are sitting in a noisy coffee shop!
What if I want a transcript of the video recording?
You can get that, too, by using the . The form will ask if you want captions, transcripts, or both.
How long will it take to get the captioned videos back?
The process generally takes 1-3 business days to complete. Priority is given to video captioning if the course includes a student needing this accommodation.
Why are we captioning only videos used in online and hybrid courses?
Funding from the system office comes from the funds collected for online course tuition, so this project will focus on online and hybrid courses.
What about videos in my face-to-face courses?
Our focus for this grant is for videos used in online and hybrid courses. But ALL course videos need to be captioned, so look for captioning when choosing videos, or seek out help in the CTLE with captioning when creating your own videos in MediaSpace.
For next year, CTLE and ASC will create a plan to support faculty who do not yet have captioned course videos in their face-to-face courses.
IMPORTANT: Keep in mind that our accessibility specialists in the Academic Support Center are always available to help with captioning if you have a student needing an accommodation.
