| Description | This course is designed to meet the training standards designed in NFPA473 "Standards for Competencies of EMS Personnel Responding to Hazardous Materials Incidents". The class combines didactic training with audio-visual materials that will provide a review of pertinent "awareness" level information. To insure a safe EMS response to a hazardous materials situation at the Operations Level, additional information and practical laboratory time will be provided as necessary. |

Pre/Corequisites
Prerequisite: Permission of the Instructor.

Course Competencies
- Analyze a hazardous materials incident to determine the magnitude of the problem in terms of outcomes
- Plan an initial response within the capabilities and competencies of available personnel, personal protective equipment, and control equipment
- Implement the planned response to favorably change the outcomes consistent with the local emergency response plan and the organization's standard operating procedures
- Evaluate the progress of the actions taken to ensure that the response objectives are being met safely, effectively, and efficiently
