This is a story told by African American history\, by immigrant history\, and by labor history\, for example.聽 \nThis year鈥檚 Documents in Detail webinar series will focus on the efforts of outsiders to 鈥渒nock on the door鈥 and gain full admittance to American life. Using primary sources\, we will examine what people thought was the American way of life and why people wanted to join it. In the later sessions in the series\, we will examine the question of whether the terms on which outsiders join in American life have now changed.聽 \nAt the 2012 Republican National Convention\, vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan argued that government interference had limited all Americans鈥 ability to access the American Dream.聽 In this final webinar\, we will revisit the American way of life that Ben Franklin helped to define and that millions have sought to attain since our country鈥檚 inception. How has it changed?聽 And to what extent have outsiders successfully become insiders? \nOur webinars meet monthly on Wednesday nights at 7:30-8:30 pm ET. Participants who remain digitally present for the duration of the webinar will receive an attendance letter from 色中色 for 1 hour of professional development.聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 \nHighlighted Document:Acceptance Speech at the Republican National Convention (2012) URL:/seminar/knockin-on-the-door-in-the-21st-century/ LOCATION:Online CATEGORIES:Webinars ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:/content/uploads/2022/07/4272C3A1-916E-417F-9439-3706431C15CC_1_201_a.jpeg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20240511T083000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20240511T141500 DTSTAMP:20240504T071803 CREATED:20240209T122614Z LAST-MODIFIED:20240221T144713Z UID:10000571-1715416200-1715436900@teachingamericanhistory.org SUMMARY:The American Founding DESCRIPTION:This seminar offers an overview of the principles of the American Founding and the documents that embody them\, especially the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution. Slavery persisted in the United States long after the adoption of the Constitution\, but what position on slavery is taken in the Constitution itself? Are the 3/5ths Compromise\, the fugitive slave clause\, the delay on abolishing the importation of slaves\, and other such provisions evidence of a pro-slavery orientation? Or are they necessary compromises designed to preserve the Union until such a time as slavery could be abolished? We will examine the provisions in the Constitution that bear on slavery\, considering them through the eyes both of those who argue that it is a pro-slavery document and those who argue that it is not. \nThis program will be conducted as a Socratic discussion\, utilizing primary source documents as the only readings\, and with the Discussion Leader facilitating the conversation\, instead of lecturing or presenting. Why did stories about secret codes\, hiding places\, and narrow escapes via a clandestine freedom network become more popular as the nation retreated from Reconstruction? Parties formed as decentralized political associations that engaged the attention of ordinary citizens and held presidents accountable to local constituencies. Eisenhower became U.S. President at the height of the Cold War\, he possessed vast experience in foreign affairs. Drawing on leadership skills developed during and after World War II\, Eisenhower managed U.S. foreign policy with caution and skill.
